Don’t worry about the plot. Plot doesn’t matter. Just enjoy the jokes and the dancing and be amazed by the impossible depth of musical talent hiding on, of all things, a bunch’a superhero shows, fer Chrissakes.
And it is amazing. Sure, there’s been a lot of noise about how Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist were both in Glee together. But Cisco – I mean, Carlos Valdes – was a Tony nominee for Once, and Winn from Supergirl did Broadway and Smash, And Jesse L. Martin, Victor Garber, John Barrowman are friggin’ living legends in musical theater, and here they are doing a trio. And then bringing in Darren Criss as the guest supervillain … yeah. Couldn’t have been better.
Not surprisingly, the cover versions of “Put a Little Love In Your Heart” and “Moon River,” and of course the final number between Barry and Iris (no spoilers!), are better than the original material, and very surprisingly the brief superhero action with J’onn J’onzz, Vibe, and Kid Flash was one of the best short punch-ups in recent memory, but … really, seriously, who cares? It’s all about the song and dance. And it’s great fun, a real bright spot.
So … more please. How about a weekly musical-variety show on The CW, completley; populated by their own network stars. And where is that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend/Flash crossover that I insist I’ve heard rumors about? Come on, you guys!
The musical edition of Flash, called “Duet,” is free for all to stream on The CW’s web sit, www.cwtv.com. There’s absolutely no reason to miss it.
